How I made it 8 years at Amazon
My manager changed my first day at Amazon. Learning this news while walking back from new hire orientation, I knew it was going to be an adventure, but I had no idea what was in store.
I’ve had 7 different managers, been promoted, managed teams, hired people, managed people out, rotated 4 times and even had my position eliminated in the middle of it all.
People ask me all the time what my advice is on how to navigate their career at Amazon.
I could tell you all the little hacks, but what it really comes down to is confidence: Confidence that I did my best. Confidence that I’m willing to try and learn from my failures. Confidence that I’m awesome even when the feedback is hard to hear. Confidence that no matter who my manager is or what team I work on, I can feel proud of the work I do.
There’s a belief that confidence is something you have or you don’t, but that’s not true. Just like learning how to provide good feedback or manage a project, confidence is a skill you have to learn and practice.
When you feel good about yourself, there’s nothing holding you back from reaching your goals. I love teaching people this skill and the tools to practice it every day.
